Ms Mthembu is a lecturer in the fields of Medical Law, Constitutional Law, Human Rights, and Bioethics at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She holds an LLB and LLM (Medical Law) degrees from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and is currently pursuing a PhD in Medical Law. Her research interests are infertility, assisted reproductive technologies, regulation of assisted reproduction, and issues of access to assisted reproductive technologies for marginalised persons in Africa. She is also a director of the Health Rights Alliance Non-Profit Company and a governing body member of the Hillcrest Advice Bureau and Bursary Fund.  Currently, she is a co-investigator in a research project examining the structure of fertility care in South Africa.
